Managing News Coverage

As the sole News Editor in my junior year, my top priority was ensuring comprehensive and timely news coverage. Whether it was a busy week packed with major events or a quieter stretch with fewer obvious stories, I took responsibility for making sure the News section always stayed consistent.

Throughout the year, I checked in with reporters to confirm they attended their event, completed their article and responded to edits so we could publish within a week of the event. During slower weeks, I actively searched for new stories and monitored Schoology posts and emails.

I learned to stay organized and accountable throughout the year by maintaining personal spreadsheets to track assignments, reporter progress, deadlines, and my own responsibilities. I also kept a running list of upcoming events to assign or include in Aquila Weekly.

Expanding News

Beyond managing event coverage, one of my biggest goals as News Editor was to make my section more impactful and connected to the community. I worked to broaden the kinds of stories we told, pushing beyond traditional event coverage to include more multimedia projects and stories that extended beyond campus.

Inspired by daily and weekly news roundups, I initiated the Aquila Weekly video series, which highlights both major and minor events happening on campus. I wanted people to not only read about the news but also watch it, especially the smaller moments that may not warrant a full article but still matter to our community.
