After a staff-wide discussion about potential editorial topics, I proposed the idea of addressing research funding cuts and took the lead in writing the piece. It’s an issue I feel strongly about, and I wanted to spotlight its tangible impact on our own community. Through guiding the editorial from idea to publication, I strove to raise awareness of a problem that often feels distant, but has real and lasting consequences close to home.
I had so much fun writing this “perspectives” piece about my experience as a commuter during the summer of my junior year, contrasting it with my co-writer’s argument that living in a residential camp was far better. Opinion pieces like this let me experiment with voice, humor, and style, pushing my writing in creative directions that straight news coverage doesn’t allow.
